I started a veggie garden this year, and between this book and the Veggie Gardener's Bible, every single question I've had has been answered thoroughly. Potatoes were a big focus on my garden, and while they are mentioned in the VGB, it's only a page or two. This book goes into detail from start to finish, and the author's writing style is direct, enjoyable, thoughtful, and with expertise. I noticed that it's a self-published book after I got it, and I'm glad. Mr. Johns knows his subject, and I like knowing I'm supporting him directly. Well done. I'll use this reference for years to come. The author lives and grows his potatoes in the United Kingdom. Had this been made clear in the description I would have not purchased the book, as I live in southwest Kansas, USA. We do not have rocky soil or too much rain or dampness here. He knows his potato varieties in as much as they pertain to his locale and climate. He even includes some interesting potato recipes. The author believes raised beds are a waste of time, effort, and resources. He'd change his mind if he ever had delt with the aggressive, invasive weeds we have in my locale. However, I agree with the author that potatoes grow well In containers. In his chapter on potato pests he doesn't even mention the potato beetle.In summary, it's probably an authoritive book on growing potatoes in the United Kingdom and, perhaps, New England, USA, but not so much for the remainder of the United States. The rest of us can find much more pertinent potato growing information in Edward C. Smith's "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible", and "The Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible".
